I am the Operations Manager of one of the language schools in Cebu and I also do English and IELTS coaching on the side.

I am working with Filipinos and Japanese now but in the past, I had the chance to work with amazing Koreans too.

Memorable? I’ll just share one thing that I do not understand until now with our students and the people I work with because I know I’ll always remember this anyway. It is likely that Japanese or Koreans do not take a shower in the morning if they have done so in the evening. I dare say 99% of the Filipinos shower when they go out of the house.

I do not specifically remember how I studied English because it’s just a part of the Philippine curriculum since first grade. All I could remember was we started with learning the alphabet of course, then we were given lots of reading exercises. Personally, I read a lot of English stories when I was young and I think that helped me somehow get familiar with the language. I think it also helps that we hear English songs and watch English programs all the time here.

If you want to learn a language, just like learning other things, you have to be motivated to do so. Find a good reason to learn it and do not forget to enjoy the journey.

The discipline among Japanese people is just amazing and unbelievable almost. I think people who have worked with Japanese or who have been to Japan could attest to this. Japanese are also among the most patient in the world and I really admire them for that because I am the complete opposite. Lastly, I like how Japan is a mix of tradition and technology. You can see the most advanced in technological breakthroughs there but their culture is so preserved. It’s a great balance and that, I think, is very attractive.

My reason for wanting to go to Japan is just silly. I want to go there because of snow. I know I could get cursed for saying that but please forgive a person who hasn’t touched snow his entire life. 😊

The Philippines is beautiful country but it’s far from being perfect. What makes me proud about the place is how friendly and welcoming the people are. I also had the chance to go to other countries but people there do not smile as people here do.

My favorite expression in my language is “hala” which technically means nothing. You say it when you’re amazed, disappointed, scared, happy, or angry. You just vary the tone. In Japanese, I like saying “Yabai na kore”. That sounds very cute to me
