likes and dislikes の意味

ここで使用されているのは名詞 noun の like / dislike です。

like

2. PLURAL NOUN

dislike

3. something disliked

Collins Dictionary

説明はいらないと思いますが、like = 好きなもの、 dislike = 嫌いなものを意味します。この場合は likes / dislikesと複数形で表現されることがほとんどですね。

somebody’s likes and dislikes はフレーズとして定着しています。

somebody’s likes and dislikes

the things that someone likes and does not like

Longman Dictionary

なので、使用する時は My… Your… など所有格も忘れずに。

Example

例えば以下のような文だと、「好き嫌い」というより「求めるもの、嫌うもの」と言う方がしっくりきますね。

What are your likes and dislikes in a relationship?
恋愛においてあなたが求めるもの、嫌うものはなに?

それに対する答えるは、例えばこんな風に言えますね。

I like someone who is kind to others, with sense of humor and the same interests as mine. I dislike someone who is selfish and wasteful of money.

文章ならこんな風にも。

Likes: kindness, sense oh humor, the same interests as mine.
Dislikes: selfishness, being wasteful of money.

その他の例文。

この国の好きなところ、嫌いなところを教えてください。
Everyone has their likes and dislikes.
人には誰でも好き嫌いがある。

wants and needs

動詞がそのまま名詞になってるパターンで、wants and needs というのもありますね。そのまま「欲しいものと必要なもの」という意味です。「必需品」とひとくくりにして訳しているサイトも見かけましたが、そのふたつは少々違います。以下の動画でわかりやすく説明してくれていますので、観てみてください。英語の勉強にもいいですね。

Understand customer’s wants and needs.
顧客の望みとニーズを理解する。

pros and cons

その他、likes and dislikes に似た表現で、pros and cons というのもありますね。日本語に訳せば、「良い点と悪い点」「メリットとデメリット」といった意味になります。

pros and cons

The pros and cons of something are its advantages and disadvantages, which you consider carefully so that you can make a sensible decision.

Collins Dictionary

この表現は決まって複数系です。

Let’s weigh up the pros and cons of wearing a school uniform.
学校制服を着ることの良い点と悪い点を比較してみよう。

DOs and DON’Ts

この表現ありなん?という感じですが、 DOs and DON’Ts も頻繁に使われている表現です。

DOs and DON’Ts

Cambridge Dictionary

なんとなく字面でも判断できますが、「すべきこと、すべきじゃないこと」ですね。

例えば、以下の動画はタイに訪れた際に守るべきマナーを紹介しています。

こちらは、ランニングをする際の注意点、コツなどを紹介しています。

その他の like の意味

さて、like は本当に色々な意味を持っていますが、動詞以外でよく使われる like は Preposition 前置詞の like でしょう。

like

PREPOSITION

5. similar to; somewhat resembling
6. in a manner characteristic of; similarly to
7. in accord with the nature of; characteristic of
8. in the mood for; desirous of
9. indicative or prophetic of
10. as for example

Collins Dictionary

ちなみに、ネイティブスピーカーが多用する “like…” は Interjection 間投詞の like です。

like

14. Informal
inserted into spoken sentences before or after a word, phrase, or clause, apparently without meaning or syntactic function, but possibly for emphasis

Collins Dictionary

「単語やフレーズの前後に意味なく挿入されるが、何かを強調していることもあり」。

liking の意味

ちなみに似た単語で liking というものもあります。

liking

1. SINGULAR NOUN
If you have a liking for something or someone, you like them.

Collins Dictionary

こちらも「好きなこと」を意味していますが、しっくりくる日本語がないため掴みづらい単語でもあります。こんな時は、無理に名詞として理解するのではなく、動詞に脳内翻訳しましょう。

I’ve always had a liking for reading.
ずっと読書が好きだ。
Yuki and Ben had a liking and respect for each other.
ユキとベンは互いが好きだったし、尊敬し合っていた。
She took an immediate liking to the band.
彼女はすぐにそのバンドを好きになった。

てな感じで今回は話がだいぶ広がってしまいましたが、理解の手助けになれば幸いです。
